Sen, Monaco, 2026
SEN transforms an underused corner of Le Méridien Beach Plaza in Monaco into a destination overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Conceived as a journey rather than a themed restaurant, the project draws inspiration from 1920s speakeasies: guests move through the hotel before discovering a concealed entrance, creating a gradual transition into a distinctly Japanese atmosphere. The design is organized around the concept of the “line,” reflected in the restaurant’s name, Sen, meaning both “one thousand” and “line” in Japanese. A continuous wall clad with one thousand pieces of European oak guides visitors through the space, from the entrance to communal dining areas and the omakase counter. Designed to capture and shape shadow, the wall becomes the project’s defining element, translating a key aspect of Japanese spatial culture into a Mediterranean setting. The project also reinterprets an accessibility ramp as an experiential arrival sequence. Locally sourced oak and terracotta-toned tiles were chosen over imported materials, reducing environmental impact while creating a subtle fusion of Japanese sensibility and Mediterranean character.
